Working with families is simultaneously the best and hardest part of the job. It can be loaded with tension, and the compartmentalization needed to avoid bringing your work home with you can give rise to a host of other challenges.
On February 21, Todd R. Reinholt facilitates the monthly Funeral Professionals Peer Support meeting for a discussion on arrangement conferences, both the challenges of the struggle and the joys of success.
No CE is available because this is the time to connect. CANA is proud to host what is hopefully the first of many of these meetings, but staff will not be attending to give you the space to talk to your peers and share. You do not need to be a CANA Member to participate.

Bill Sampson and Lisa Smith facilitate the September meeting to get at the heart of what motivates us to serve. When people ask why you chose a career in funeral service, the typical answer is, “Because I want to help people, or I like helping people.” Helping people is what we do. During the meeting, we’ll reflect on why we do it (help people), why it’s important to us and rethink do how we do it, and how the how has changed during the pandemic, throughout our career or in our changing roles.

Ross Wilson facilitates the August meeting discussion. Ross is a hospice chaplain in Ottawa, and mental health consultant who specializes in psychological first aid and end of life care. His work has proven to be essential amidst the global pandemic. “During the first lockdown, he observed that first responders and front-line workers tasked with the responsibility of helping others, felt stressed and burnt out for not having support themselves. ‘Many of them would ask, well who is helping us?’”

WHAT TO EXPECT
CONNECTION
Peer support is provided by peers, for peers. Founded on key principles such as respect and shared responsibility, it’s a group of individuals with similar experiences who encourage and assist each other. Everyone is expected to treat others with care and understanding. Everyone will be given space to share their story, but no one will be “called on” because respectful listening can also be beneficial.
Anonymity is respected: attendees are asked to share just their first name or initial when they log in.
Participants will keep the information shared in the group confidential and the event will not be recorded.
Cameras and microphones are not required to be on during the meeting.
WHAT IT IS AND ISN’T
This meeting is not a substitute for therapy
This event does not provide continuing education credit
